Heat Pump Installation & Repair in Washington County, PA

Residential heat pump repair, replacement and installation for homes across Washington County and the South Hills. The owner does the work himself.

A heat pump is one piece of equipment that handles both heating and cooling — it moves heat instead of burning fuel to make it. For a lot of homes it can replace both a furnace and an air conditioner, or work alongside a furnace as a backup. We handle residential heat pump repair, replacement and installation for homes in Houston, Canonsburg, Washington, McMurray, Cecil Township, McDonald, Bethel Park, Upper St. Clair, Bridgeville, South Fayette and the towns in between. You get a clear answer and a price before any work starts.

How a heat pump handles a western Pennsylvania winter

A heat pump doesn't make heat the way a furnace does — it moves it. Even on a cold day, there's heat in the outside air, and the heat pump pulls that heat indoors. When summer comes, it reverses and pulls heat out of your house. One system, two jobs.

Western Pennsylvania winters get genuinely cold, and that's worth a real conversation. Modern heat pumps are built to heat in cold climates, and a lot of homes run one through the winter just fine. For the coldest stretches, a heat pump can also be paired with a gas furnace as a backup — the heat pump handles the everyday heating and the furnace kicks in when the temperature drops. The right setup depends on your home, your ductwork, and your fuel and electric rates.

Pairing a heat pump with a gas furnace

A heat pump and a gas furnace can share the same ductwork and work as a team. The heat pump runs for most of the heating season and handles all your cooling, and the furnace steps in as a backup when it's too cold for the heat pump to keep up on its own. It's a setup that makes sense for some homes and not others.

Whether you're replacing a furnace, replacing an air conditioner, or thinking about both at once, it's worth a conversation. We come out, look at what you have, and tell you honestly if a heat pump — on its own or paired with a furnace — fits your home.

We install Goodman, Comfortmaker, Rheem and Mitsubishi equipment, and we're an authorized Comfortmaker dealer. Every job comes with a 1-year labor warranty.

Why correct sizing matters

A heat pump that's too big will short-cycle — turn on and off every few minutes — and never run long enough to pull humidity out of the air in summer. One that's too small will run constantly and still fall behind on the coldest or hottest days. A guess gets you neither comfort nor efficiency.

The right way to size one is a load calculation, not a guess. We look at your home — the square footage, the windows, the insulation, the direction it faces — and figure out what size actually fits. A new system should be matched to your home, not picked off a shelf.

Signs your heat pump needs attention

Because a heat pump heats and cools, problems can show up in either season.

  • No heating or cooling

The system runs but the air isn't warm in winter or cool in summer.

  • Outdoor unit iced up

Frost builds on the outdoor coil and doesn't clear, even in a defrost cycle.

  • Short cycling

The system turns on and off every few minutes instead of running a normal cycle.

  • Weak airflow

Little air moves through the registers even when the fan is on.

  • High electric bills

Your usage is the same but your electric bills keep climbing.

  • Stuck in one mode

It cools but won't heat, or heats but won't cool.
